Old Wives' Tales

Even if you're going to be Team Green (or Team Yellow, or whatever you want to call it) testing out Old Wives' Tales can be a fun way to pass the time until our babies are here! It could also be fun to keep track of who tried these out- and what the tests say- to reality. So have fun, and let us know via the Contact Page what your prediction is!

Chinese Prediction Chart
There are numerous charts out there purporting to be accurate, but is it really possible that every woman born in a certain month of a certain year will have a boy? Hardly. This chart uses lunar age and lunar conception date to predict if it will be a boy or girl.

Even & Odd
This is supposedly based on Mayan tradition, but the deal is that year the mother was born and the year the baby was conceived are both even or both odd, then the baby will be a girl. And if one is even and the other is odd, then its definitely a boy.
For example, a woman born in 1985 that conceived in 2013 will be having a girl, but if she had been born in 1984 or 1986 it would be a boy.
Like the Chinese Prediction Chart, this is a bit hard to swallow but its still fun.

The Necklace or Wedding Ring Test
You can use either a necklace with a pendant or your wedding ring, dangling from a string or a necklace. Hold it either over your palm, or in front of your belly, and note how the ring or pendant moves. If it swings from side to side this means its a girl, and if it swirls in a circle its a boy.
As a caveat, this test has also been posted with the opposite results but the overwhelming number of websites checked use the above answers.

The Hand Test
Put your hands out in front of you- and then click the button below to find out what the positioning of your hands means. Don't read the link beforehand or else you'll accidentally skew how you react.

The Key Test
Pick up a key- any key- from the floor or a table. Just like with the hand test, don't click the button below until after you have picked up the key.

Morning Sickness
Rumor has it that the amount of morning sickness you have is due to whether or not you're having a boy or girl. If you can't keep anything down, it might be because you're baby is a girl. If you're coasting along without a hint of nausea in sight it might because you're growing a boy...or that you're incredibly lucky and not afflicted like so many other women are.

Fetal Heart Rate
Pay attention at your first ultrasound or the OB appointment when they check baby's heart rate. If its over 140bpm this means its a girl, and if its less than 140bpm its a boy.

Cravings
What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, and everything nice, right? Based on this tale, if you're having a girl you'll be craving sweets, but if you're having a boy you'll be craving salty, spicy, sour foods.

How You Carry
The theory is that if you carry high you're carrying a girl, and that if you carry low your little bundle of joy-to-be is a boy. Or that you have a longer torso, or your baby is positioned just so. Either way, you have a 50-50 shot of it being correct.

Physical Changes to Your Body
There are numerous Old Wives' Tales pertaining to how your physical changes- or lack thereof- during pregnancy. So starting at the top...
Face: Ever heard that a baby girls steals her mother's beauty? If you notice that your face is seeming rounder than usual, or that your nose is becoming wider, it might be because you're having a girl.
Skin: If you feel like you've jumped back to your teenage years with pimples and outbreaks you have a good chance of having a girl. Or just skin thats more susceptible to hormonal changes.
On the flip side, having extra dry skin is said to be linked to having a baby boy.
Further down your belly, if you've got a bit of linea nigra going already, pay attention to where it starts and ends. The story is that if it goes all the way up to your ribcage you'll be having a boy but if it stops at your belly button then you're having a girl.
Breasts: If your breasts become significantly fuller with each passing week, some say its because you've got more than the average amount of estrogen coursing through your veins thanks to a baby girl in your uterus. If your girls are pretty much the same as pre-pregnancy, this might be because its a boy.
Legs: If you're noticing that you feel you need to shave your legs more often than usual, its said to be because you're having a boy. If you don't notice a difference its because you're having a girl.

If all of the above aren't convincing enough for you- or you just really miss doing pee tests now that you're pregnant- there are a few Old Wives' Tales centering around your urine (or mixing things in it). As a fair warning, no one on this blog is advocating the Drano test because mixing Drano and pee can be extremely dangerous. And Drano shouldn't be poured down your toilet.
Baking soda: Mix a small amount of baking soda with your pee and take note if any reaction is occurring. Supposedly the acid in your urine from having a boy will make it fizz. If there isn't a reaction its because you're having a girl.
Commercial predictor tests: Sold in stores or on Amazon for $25-40 these can be used any time after 10 weeks gestation and claim to be 78-80% accurate.
